The disease of total substance is in turn dismissed as a novelty of chymical provenance — a recent fiction, first devised, I think, by Fernel; it seems to have first sprouted from chymistry, recens figmentum, à Fernelio primu[m], vt arbitror, exogitatum. Videtur autem è chimia pullulare primum coepisse.
