A second printing was issued at Rome in 1690 by Giuseppe Vannacci, carrying a slightly modified title (Lexicon Mathematicum Hoc Est Rerum Omnium ad Universam plane Mathesim quoquo modo, directe vel indirecte spectantium, Collectio, et Explicatio) and new Roman approbations, but otherwise essentially a reissue of the 1668 text. Third, the appended Digressio on sympathetic cure situates Vitale within the early modern debate over action at a distance and occult qualities — what we would now call the weapon-salve and powder-of-sympathy controversy, following Kenelm Digby's Of the Sympathetic Powder (1644–1658) and the long Italian debate on sympathia and antipathia that runs from Fracastoro through Telesio to the Jesuit magnetic philosophy. Vitale's Digressio is an early Italian Catholic theological pronouncement on the sympathetic cure, and serves as a touchstone in the historiography of seventeenth-century mechanism, magnetism, and occult qualities. The demarcating logic here turns on a casuistic presumption for Nature: it is, as Vitale puts it, the common axiom of all theologians that whenever it is doubted whether an effect is superstitious or natural, arising from a natural cause even if unknown to us, it must always be judged natural, vt quandocumque dubitatur an effectus sit superstitiosus, an naturalis à causa naturali etsi nobis ignota proueniens, censendus semper est naturalis. He reinforces the presumption with Caramuel's counsel that if you see something rare you should give thanks to the Author of Nature, and that unless he evidently sees some pact or demonic intervention underlying it he will not believe it present, Si quid rarum vides, gratias age Natura Conditori. Crucially, Vitale does not thereby endorse action at a distance; he refers the magnetic cure to an immediate natural agency, saying that the magnetic cure is done by Nature acting immediately and intrinsically, yet excited extrinsically by the motion of the medicated blood and by the vitriol, Dico igitur Magneticam curationem fieri à Natura immediatè & intrinsecus operante, excitata tamen extrinsecus à motu sanguinis medicati, & à vitriolo. Recent scholarship (notably Hedrick on Digby, and the work of Stephen Clucas and Guido Giglioni on the broader natural-magic debates) has stressed how Catholic writers such as Vitale sought to retain a doctrine of natural sympathy without lapsing into what the Index condemned as magia.

In the secondary literature, the Lexicon is treated principally in the standard histories of early modern mathematics and astronomy (Thorndike, VIII, 192 ff.; Rose, The Italian Renaissance of Mathematics, 1975; the relevant articles in the Dictionary of Scientific Biography), in the dedicated biographical study by Andrea Rabassini cited above, and in the historiographical literature on post-Tridentine astrology (Rutkin; Tessicini). The historiographical consensus treats Vitale as a minor but representative figure of the late-seventeenth-century Catholic textbook tradition — neither a creative scientist nor a controversialist, but a careful compiler whose lexicographic method makes him an unusually clear witness to the post-1633 boundary-work of the Catholic mathematical sciences.

The Object Biography: Printing, Censorship, and the Two Editions

Two printings of the Lexicon Mathematicum Astronomicum Geometricum are known and constitute the entire documented textual history of the work.

The editio princeps was issued at Paris in 1668, printed by Louis Billaine (Ludovicus Billaine or Billanus; died 25 August 1681), imprimeur-libraire ordinaire du Roi, whose shop stood in the magno Iesuitarum aulae vestibulo — the great entrance-hall of the former Collège de Clermont, the principal institutional foyer of post-Tridentine Catholic scholarship in Paris. The volume is an octavo, collating [22], 540, [60] folios, signatures a–o, A–Z8, Aa–Mm8, with preliminary leaves, the body of the lexicon, and an index of cited authors. The type is roman for the main text, with italic for cross-references; the title-page is printed in red and black and bears a woodcut vignette of the divine geometer on its verso. The volume opens with a dedicatory letter to Guidobald, Count of Thun and Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg (1616–1668; archbishop from 1654 until his death on 1 June 1668), proceeds through the Praefatio ad lectorem and the formal approbations, and concludes with the Digressio physio-theologica on the sympathetic cure. The choice of Guidobald as dedicatee situates the Lexicon within the patronage complex of Catholic-princely support for mathematical and astronomical learning in the second half of the seventeenth century, a pattern visible also in the dedications of Riccioli, Kircher, and Schott. The fact that the dedicatee died in the very year of publication lends the volume a poignant biographical coincidence.

The front matter further records the dual censorship through which the work passed before printing. The boundary he draws even permits the continued use of knowledge whose origin was suspect, for he follows the theologians in holding it licit to use knowledge once acquired through the demon's aid, provided the use itself does not depend on the demon's help, licitum mihi esse vti scientia, seu rerum naturalium notitia semel à me, siue ab alio ope Dæmonis acquisita, dummodo tamen vsus à Dæmonis auxilio non dependeat. The Digressio is therefore a primary document for the history of the weapon-salve controversy as it was adjudicated within Catholic theological mainstream in the 1660s, and it constitutes one of the earliest Italian Catholic theological pronouncements on the sympathetic cure before the great Jesuit treatises of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.

The second printing was issued at Rome in 1690, printed at the press and expense of Giuseppe Vannacci (or Vannacci). It is a quarto, collating [12], 612, [40] pages. It carries a slightly modified title — Lexicon Mathematicum Hoc Est Rerum Omnium ad Universam plane Mathesim quoquo modo, directè vel indirectè spectantium, Collectio, et Explicatio — replaces the Paris imprimatur with new Roman approbations, and is otherwise essentially a reissue of the 1668 text with corrected typographical errors and a slightly re-ordered sequence of preliminary matter. Bibliographers treat the 1690 imprint as a reissue rather than a new edition; the text is essentially that of the 1668 princeps. The Roman printing extended the circulation of the work into the Italian Catholic book market, where post-Index restrictions of 1633 made locally produced Catholic lexica especially valuable.

No further printings, editions, translations, or modern critical editions are known. The Lexicon has never been translated, in whole or in part, into any modern language, nor has it been re-edited with scholarly apparatus. The work is accessible to researchers chiefly through the digitized copies now provided by Google Books (the 1668 issue digitized from the Ghent University Library copy), the Internet Archive, and the digitized holdings of major European research libraries including the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, and the Vatican Apostolic Library.

In its transmission the Lexicon belongs to the genre of the polymath mathematical lexicon whose mid-seventeenth-century exemplars include the Lexicon Technicum of Johann Heinrich Alsted (1634, expanded 1662), the Lexicon Universale of Johann Jacob Hofmann (Basel, 1677), and the Jesuit and Oratorian dictionaries of mathematics produced in France and the German-speaking lands. In its immediate reception and after-life, the Lexicon appears to have circulated principally as a reference work for theological and philosophical students, for teachers of mathematics in the Catholic colleges of the Theatine and other regular clergy, and for the mathematically literate prince-bishop or patron. No known contemporary controversy, condemnation, or rebuttal attaches specifically to the Lexicon; the work's defensive provisions (the dual censorship, the dedicatory letter, the appended digression) appear to have been sufficient to forestall post-publication objection. The work survives as a printed text of fixed seventeenth-century form, accessible chiefly through digital surrogates and through the holdings of major European and North American research libraries.

Inside the Alphabet: How Vitale's Entries Sort the Licit from the Forbidden

The Preface and the Opening of the Alphabet: A Method Declared

Vitale's opening apparatus and the first reaches of the alphabetical dictionary together lay out the intellectual scaffolding on which the entire lexicon rests: a defense of the mathematical disciplines conducted in an explicitly theological register, followed by an editorial method for admitting, glossing, and quarantining the terms of a discipline he holds to be at once most excellent and most despised. The preface functions as the manifesto of the whole, and its affective thesis is stated in unmistakably elevated terms — that the mathematical disciplines are those which imbue our mind with the virtues, raise it to the noblest things, and form it to the likeness of God, a claim already registered in the summary of the work's aim above. The verb efformant is the load-bearing term there: mathematics does not merely instruct but shapes the soul toward its divine exemplar, a claim that lifts the disciplines out of the merely utilitarian and installs them within a program of spiritual formation proper to a cleric regular. This is not incidental rhetoric but the ground on which Vitale can later justify the labor of purification — a knowledge capable of divinizing the soul is precisely the sort of thing whose corruption must be exposed and cordoned.

The dignity so asserted is immediately given an epistemic footing. Vitale grounds the prestige of the disciplines in their demonstrative certainty, observing that those arts are called mathemata which rest on firm demonstrations and are thereby best fitted to instilling discipline in the mind, Mathemata enim dicuntur artes, quæ firmis demonstrationibus constant: quæ quidem idcircò ad disciplinam animo inserendam aptissimæ inveniuntur. The etymological move — from mathemata as "things learned" to the arts that rest on firmæ demonstrationes — is the criterion that will do the polemical work throughout: what is demonstratively certain is licit and dignifying, while what is merely conjectural or "experimental" falls under suspicion. The utility of the disciplines is then rehearsed across the civic and professional spectrum, culminating in a pointed rhetorical question concerning medicine, which without astronomical direction, Vitale asks, would it not be harmful and deadly to the sick, Medicina nonne sine Astronomiæ directione ægris esset incommoda atque exitialis?. The example is carefully chosen: the astronomical timing of medical intervention represents exactly the kind of licit, natural application of celestial knowledge that Vitale wishes to rescue, an application that touches the stars only as natural causes and never trespasses upon the contingent freedom of the human will.

Having established the dignity and utility of mathesis, the preface pivots to the problem that motivates the entire lexicon: the historical and moral slide by which so noble a body of knowledge fell into contempt. The engine of this degeneration is diabolical. The devil, having once sought God's likeness, now wishes nothing more than to ape God and to corrupt the most perfect things in contempt of God, nil magis affectet, quam Dei simiam facere, & perfectissima quæque in Dei contemptum corrumpere. The figure of the Dei simia supplies the theological logic of the whole polemic: corruption operates precisely upon the best things, so that the very excellence of astronomy is what makes its perversion into astrology so grievous and so plausible. The corruption is then narrated as a genuine historical succession. Hence astrology succeeds astronomy, Vitale writes, and because this knowledge was merely experimental and too curious, Hinc Astronomiæ Astrologia succedit, & quia hæc notitia experimentalis tantum erat, & curiosa nimis. The characterization of the corrupted art as experimentalis tantum and curiosa nimis is the exact obverse of the earlier definition of mathemata: where legitimate mathematics rests on firm demonstration, the divinatory art rests only on accumulated observation ungoverned by reason, and it is driven by an illicit curiositas that oversteps the bounds of natural knowledge. The Chaldeans, archetypal originators of the superstition, are named as those who beyond all others, more superstitious, gave themselves wholly to it, Chaldæi super omnes superstitiosiores in eam toti incubuerunt, fixing the geographical and ethnic origin of the corruption in the ancient East.

From this diagnosis Vitale derives his editorial program, and it is here that the dictionary form reveals itself as constitutive rather than incidental. The preface declares that he set himself to show not so much the principles of mathematics grounded in true philosophy as the vanities with which it had been corrupted — the same programmatic statement of aim quoted above. The lexicon is thus conceived not merely as a positive register of licit doctrine but as a controlled display of the vanitates themselves — a display whose purpose is to let the reader recognize and reject them. Under the Decan doctrine, Vitale transmits the Arabic teaching in full and then repudiates it as a vain, superstitious thing and mere trifling of the Arabs, cum aliàs, res sit euanida, superstitiosa, & mera Arabum nugamenta. The pattern is instructive: the doctrine is preserved for the completeness of the reference and the satisfaction of curiosity, then disowned by an explicit verdict that names it superstitiosa — the precise charge that the preface had traced to the Chaldean corruption. The same demonstrative criterion is turned against a modern authority when Vitale examines Cardano's claims about the Sun's apogee, demanding to know on what foundation he asserts this — whether led by reason, as a good philosopher, or by repeated experiment, as an astrologer, At quo tandem fundamento id profert? Ratione forsitan ductus, vt bonus Philosophus; an verò experimento pluries repetito, vt Astrologus?. The disjunction between ratio and experimentum rehearses in miniature the preface's opposition between demonstrative mathematics and merely experimental astrology, and Vitale enlists Riccioli's Almagestum novum to show the supposed observation impossible.

The doctrinal center of this stretch is the long entry on astrology, where the criterion of demarcation is stated with juridical precision: that part of astrology was justly proscribed by the Church which deals with things in any way free, a verdict already recorded in the philological framing of astrologia iudiciaria above. The phrase de rebus vtcunque liberis fixes the boundary at the freedom of the will: natural and necessary effects — in medicine, agriculture, navigation — remain open to legitimate astrological consideration, while the contingent acts of free agents lie beyond any certain prediction and their divination is condemned. The same preference for demonstrative and observational certainty over patristic authority governs the cosmographical entries. Vitale concedes that in our times it is so certain that Antipodes exist that to deny them now is simply to rave, nostris temporibus vsq[ue] adeò certum est dari Antipodas — a remarkable subordination of Augustine and Lactantius to the testimony of New World navigation and Spanish evangelization. The systematizing impulse is equally visible in the treatment of the ocean, where Vitale enumerates that in the sea or ocean there are six wholly distinct motions, Hinc in mari, seu Oceano, sex sunt motus omninò diuersi, organizing the tidal and hydrographic phenomena into a discrete taxonomy of the kind the lexicon everywhere favors.

The celestial novelties receive the same discriminating treatment, now with an eschatological dimension held firmly at arm's length. Reporting the 1572 nova, Vitale records that Beza rashly opined this star was of the kind of comets, indeed the very one that had guided the Magi, Theodorus Beza... opinatus est hanc stellam fuisse de genere Cometarum, and he rehearses the prophetic readings of Tycho and others before noting dryly that the predicted upheavals, said to arise out of Muscovy, had never in fact come to pass. The verb opinatus est and the adverbial framing consign these prognostications to the domain of unverified conjecture, exactly the curiositas the preface had condemned, while the new star itself is retained as a genuine celestial fact. Across this opening stretch, then, the same instrument operates without interruption: a term is admitted for completeness, its demonstrative or observational credentials are weighed, and it is assigned by explicit verdict to the licit or the illicit side of a boundary drawn always at the point where free will, superstition, or ungrounded conjecture begins.

From C to G: The Method Enacted Entry by Entry

The letter-run gathered here — articles from the middle of C through the opening of G — shows the Lexicon's demarcating programme not as a set of prefatory promises but as a discipline enacted entry by entry, in the very grain of definition, etymology, and adjudication among authorities. What the front matter announces in principle, these lemmata perform: each technical word is admitted, glossed, and then either licensed as natural knowledge or held at a wary distance as the vanity that had corrupted a noble discipline. The cumulative effect is a working demonstration that the whole vocabulary of the celestial arts can be handled without hazard, provided the boundary between nature and superstition is drawn afresh at every term.

The lexicon's characteristic method is visible already in its manner of grounding a definition in ancient authority through etymology. The great cosmological article opens by deriving the very name of the heavens from the engraver's art, holding that the heaven is called from cælare, to engrave, because it bears the impressed lights of the stars like a work engraved with various images, Dicitur | cælum à cælando, vt habet Ambrosius lib. 2 examiner. eò quod | impressa stellarum lumina habeat, quasi cælarum varijs imaginibus | opus. The etymology is not ornamental: by lodging the definition in Ambrose it enlists a Father of the Church at the threshold of a treatise that will proceed to some of the boldest cosmological claims in the volume, so that the patristic authority underwrites the natural-philosophical exposition to follow. This is the lexicon's signature gesture — the ancient auctor cited not for decoration but as warrant that the term about to be unfolded belongs safely within the compass of licit learning.

Nowhere is the substantive daring of that exposition more evident than in the treatment of the celestial matter itself. Following the reform of Tycho, the article on the heavens abandons the solid orbs altogether, asserting that one must now hold not many heavens but a single vast one through which the stars move like fish in the sea — the vivid image already introduced in the philological framing of caelum fluidum above. The simile of fish swimming in the sea does more rhetorical work than its brevity suggests: it renders the fluid heaven intuitively, converting an abstruse cosmological reform into a vivid image of unimpeded motion through a continuous medium, and it registers the confidence — procul omni dubio — with which the post-Tychonic consensus had settled the question for a Catholic mathematician of Vitale's generation. That confidence is not idiosyncratic bravado but the received teaching of the skies, installed here as the natural-philosophical default against which the older apparatus of nested spheres is quietly retired.

Yet the same article that liquefies the heavens does not simply discard the older cosmic harmonics. The music of the spheres is admitted in a carefully hedged form, on patristic warrant: the seven heavenly orbs are said to turn with sweet-sounding harmony, and their sweetest concord is effected by their revolution, Sep[er]em calorum | orbis cum dulcisona harmonia voluuntur, ac suauissimi concentus | eorum circuitione efficiuntur. The manoeuvre is instructive for the lexicon's method of controlled transmission: the harmony-of-the-spheres tradition is rehabilitated precisely by being purged of its heretical accretions — it is admitted as long as it is separated from the Marcosian excess that Irenaeus had condemned. The doctrine survives, in other words, only after the demarcating instrument has sorted the licit remainder from the proscribed corruption, a small enactment of the whole work's governing casuistry within a single lemma.

The controlled transmission is equally legible in the astrological entries, where the author repeatedly interposes patristic or theological cover to license a practice that might otherwise fall under suspicion of superstition. The doctrine of climacteric years is defended in exactly these terms, with the theologians and Fathers marshalled as guarantors: observing climacteric years is neither superstitious nor useless, as the theologians commonly teach, and among the Fathers Ambrose, Augustine, Bede, and Boethius, Porrò id | obseruate, neque superstitiosum esse, neque inutile docent | communiter Theologi, & ex Partibus Ambrosius, Augustinus, | Beda, Boëhius, alijque. The negative construction — neque superstitiosum ... neque inutile — is itself the tell: the author anticipates the charge of superstition and pre-empts it by piling up authorities, so that the licit natural core of the practice is defended by the very witnesses whose names close the door on the illicit divinatory extension. This is the boundary between natural astrology and forbidden prognostication drawn in miniature, and drawn with the theologians standing guard over the licit side.

The physical entries on transient celestial phenomena show the same double movement of natural explanation and portent-doctrine held together. The comet is defined as a material meteorological body with a signifying office: an earthy vapour whose dense parts cohere strongly, ascending by the power of some star to the upper region, and signifying a great alteration of realms and of other things in this world, quod sit | vapor terrenus habens grossas partes fortiter conjacentes, ascenden| ses per virtutem alicujus astri ad superiorem partem, astus, regno| rum, &c aliarum rerum magnam alterationem significans in hoc | mundo. The definition binds a wholly physical account of the comet's material constitution to its portentous signification without any sense of strain, for the two operate at different registers — the meteorological explaining what the comet is, the portent-doctrine explaining what it means — and the lexicon's task is to record both while assigning the significatory claim to the province of natural influence rather than divination.

That the causal doctrine underlying such significations is meant to remain within natural bounds is clearest in the exposition of primary directions, the technical heart of the astrological apparatus. Here the author distinguishes the passive receiver from the active agent with scholastic precision, explaining that the significator behaves as a passible subject because it signifies something in general — life, diseases, fortunes — and receives into itself the impressions of the stars that come to meet it, eò quia significat in genere | aliquid, vt vitam, morbos, fortunas &c. et recipiat in se im| pressiones siderum occursantium, while the promissor is the efficient cause that decrees and promises. The vocabulary of causa efficiens, impressiones, and passive reception situates the entire doctrine within the Aristotelian physics of natural causation: directions are presented as the operation of celestial bodies upon a receptive terrestrial subject, a species of natural influence rather than fatal decree — the crucial distinction that keeps the practice, in the author's construction, on the near side of the line that the freedom of the will guards.

Against this scaffolding of licit doctrine the author sets his polemical dismissals, and the sharpest of these fall upon the Arab devices he regards as empty ingenuity. The fridariae doctrine is dispatched by way of an Aesopic fable, the fox before the beautiful but brainless statue crying out, O what a work! but it lacks a brain, O quale, inquir, | opus! sed cerebro | cares. The wit is doing methodological work: the fable concedes the formal elegance of the Arab arrangement — quale opus — while denying it any substantive content, and so performs in a single stroke the sorting operation that the whole lexicon undertakes, admitting a term for the sake of completeness while marking it as vanity void of the philosophical rigour that alone dignifies a discipline. The criterion of judgment here is the same one that governs the author's ranking of sources generally: elegance is no substitute for philosophy.

That criterion is applied even to a canonical astrological authority. The precision of the reckoning — year, day, and hour — advertises the demonstrative certainty that the lexicon claims for the mathematical disciplines, even as the epithets mira and portentosa retain the portentous frame within which such phenomena are read.

The portent-doctrine is anything but abstract, for the author roots it in the calamities of his own lifetime. The letter G closes on a panegyric to geometry that states the elevating power he attributes to the whole discipline: it is no small praise of geometry, he writes, that it carries human minds creeping on the ground and fixed to the earth into that celestial seat, and sets before the intellect the admirable constitution of this world, the order of things, and the magnitude, distance, situation, and regular motion of the celestial bodies, Vt proinde non minima laus Geometriæ sit, quod humanas mentes humi repentes ac terræ infixas in illam coelestem sedem innehat, & admirandam mundi huius constitutionem, rerum ordinem, corporum coelestium magnitudinem, distantiam, situm, regularem incessionem intellectui tostro exponat. The metaphor of ascent — minds that creep on the ground raised to a celestial seat — is not incidental ornament but the positive theological pole against which the entire lexicon's suspicion of divinatory astrology is measured: geometry, and the demonstrative disciplines it exemplifies, do the very work of dignifying the mind that superstition perverts. From N to Q: The Fluid Heaven at Work and the Boldest Speculation

The alphabetical march from N through Q shows Vitale's demarcating instrument at work in its most characteristic setting: the discrete entry, where a term is defined, its authorities marshaled, and its place on the near or far side of the licit quietly assigned. What is striking across this stretch is how the undramatic medium of the gloss carries commitments that are cosmologically bold, methodologically pointed, and — in one instance — genuinely startling, without ever abandoning the encyclopedist's posture of controlled transmission.

The methodological temper of the whole is nowhere clearer than in the entry on the ninth sphere, where the received Alfonsine machinery of the eighth sphere's slow oscillation, the motions the astronomers call those of libration or trepidation, quas vocant librationis; seu trepidationis, is rehearsed only to be refused. This is the thesis statement of the work's astral physics, and it is unequivocal: the stars are real, universal, efficient causes of terrestrial change.

Precisely because the claim is so strong, it requires the counterweight that keeps it orthodox, and Vitale supplies it through Kircher's formula that nature is ruled by two principles, nature and will, nature being subject to the stars, the will free — the compatibilist distinction already set out in the historiographical account of the work's astral causation above. From Q to Z: New Aspects, the Copernican Verdict, and the Turn to Sympathy
